Bisa Butler: The Storm, the Whirlwind and the Earthquake

The Claire Oliver Gallery, Harlem New York

February 29 , 2020- June 27, 2020

Bisa presented her first solo exhibition at the Claire Oliver Gallery in February of 2020. The cornerstone of the exhibit was a life sized quilted portrait of a young Frederick Douglass. The title of the exhibit was taken from an excerpt of a speech given by Frederick Douglass July 5th, 1852; “What To The Slave Is The Fourth of July?” Exhibited were Bisa’s life sized quilted portraits of ordinary African Americans inspired by vintage photographs.
